2001 Harp Odyssey History
The 2001 Florida Harpers and Friends annual workshop was a success this year with over 40 attendees. We added an extra day, taking advantage of the long weekend allowed more time for participation and relaxation.
Mary Brigid Roman was the featured artist. She presented a workshop on improvisation, taught private lessons, and graced the community and workshop attendees with a concert. Victor Roman regulated harps and presented a harp maintenance workshop.
"Sir Laurence, the Wandering Minstrel", Larry Allen Fisher, delighted those who attended his sessions. We learned about the life of a wnadering minstrel, the news bearer of the day. He played various instruments and songs.
"Tuning the Harpist...the Alexander Technique" was presented by Tully Hall. The technique is an all activity reviwion of sitting, standing, moving. No matter what you do the techniques are applicable.
"Music Therapy, an Introduction", was presented by Miriam Gentle. Music therapy as a field or study is relatively new; however, the benefits of harp music have been long known.
There were several vendors including The Virginia Harp Center. They provided a wide variety of harps, music, and CD's. Part of the fun was sampling harps, discussing options, perusing music, and purchasing items.
Annual Meeting Report
Annual Meeting for 2001 took place on Sunday, January 14, 2001 10:30 a.m. during the 2001 Harp Odyssey Workshop. There were 22 members in attendance.
Main topic of discussion was workshop 2002. Workshop Coordinator, Melody Anglin presented the idea of taking FHF on a workshop cruise or on a travel tour. Since there are high monetary penalties to not filling a ship, it was voted to wait until our membership was closer to 100 or so. Greater membership would equal greater participation and therefore be less risk on the FHF treasury. It then decided to return to the Holiday Inn in Daytona Beach Shores and the Westminster Presbyterian Church where this years event was held and all were very happy.
Artists that were mentioned to return to our workshops were: The Brocks, Bambi Fischer for "making lessons exciting for you and children," Larry Fisher for more costumed musical story telling, Miriam Gentle with harp therapy part two, Joy Hoffman, Jan Jennings for weddings-taxes-and concert, Ray Pool, and Grainne Yeats.
Artists that were of new interest to the group were: Alfredo Ortiz, Roberto Pereda, Dr. Price, Sue Richards, and Linda Rice.
The FHF Workshop coordinator, was to use these lists to help create the next workshop 2002 and possibly a cruise event in the future. The artists chosen from the list would be her choice according to budget, availability and general balance for the weekend's needs. The meeting was adjourned at 11:30 a.m.

The FHF in the Fort Myers/Naples area had the pleasure of joining the AHS Palm Coast Chapter for a weekend of fun with Louise Trotter. Saturday was spent in workshops with Louise and Sunday afternoon Louise presented a concert. Several of the Palm Coast Chapter's members joined Louise on stage and played ensemble music.
Also - here is some news about some FHF members from our side of Florida.
Barbara Fischer recently met Myron Floren, accordionist for the Lawrence Welk orchestra. Barbara plays harp and accordion.
Larry Fisher has been busy with his Florida Tour 2001 which included three schools in Lee County, five schools in Hillsborough County, twenty-one schools in Collier County, and twenty-five schools in Miami-Dade County. Larry was also a guest artist and/or workshop presenter at the Ft. Myers Medieval Faire, Florida Harpers and Friends in Daytona Beach and at the Harp Weekend Renaissance Gala at the Ritz-Carlton in Naples.
Pam Kuhn had the opportunity to play for the 20th anniversary of Hope Hospice. It was a beautiful celebration of this great organization as well as a ground breaking for their new facility in Cape Coral.
News from Melbourne
The Melbourne Harp Chorale is now meeting at the home of Mary Alice Riley. The next scheduled meeting is May 5.
The news from Melbourne is grandchildren. Sue Sorensen has gotten her granddaughter Kaytlynn, 7, interested in playing. Sue even got her a small harp to start. The two are enjoying playing together and have a duet worked up.
Vicki Mansur also has her grandchildren playing, all five of them. Four year old Joshua is no prodigy but he sure likes to be included and must have his five minute "lesson."
